How to Install an Inground Pool Liner Safely and Correctly
A safe inground pool liner installation starts with prep: empty and inspect the pool, fix defects, clean the shell, then set and smooth the new liner before refilling.

Is it possible to put in an inground pool liner on your own? For the most part, yes. A homeowner with a sound pool shell and the right kind of liner can certainly do it, provided one is willing to be careful. It is a matter of preparation, good measurements and patience. That said, if there is structural damage to be had, rusted walls, or loose coping and track parts that would prevent the liner from seating as it should, put the tools down and engage a qualified pool professional.
Pre-installation checks Any work on the liner must be preceded by turning off the pump and related equipment. Make sure to read what the manufacturer has to say in the manuals for both the pool and the liner. Wear the proper PPE, including eye protection and gloves. Under no circumstances should one reach into operating suction or attempt live suction work.
Take stock of the pool and its environs first: - Are the wall panels free of dents, cracks or rust? Check for loose seams. - Look at the floor for voids, debris or anything sharp. - See if the liner track, bead receiver or coping are in order. - Give the steps, gaskets, skimmers and returns a once over for rough edges or wear.
Should you come across a serious defect in the wall, water intrusion behind the liner or a fitting that requires some structural attention, let the project stand until it is fixed.
Getting the shell ready Vinyl wants a smooth, clean base to lay flat. After taking out the old liner, give the walls and floor a thorough going over; leftover debris is a recipe for wrinkles and clogged equipment.
We recommend this approach: 1. Clear the corners and bottom of any loose material. 2. Loosen up sediment by brushing the coves, floor and walls. 3. Run a shop vac or pool vac over the remaining dirt. 4. Do another pass to spot any rough patches or fasteners that have come loose.
While at it, verify that the size, shape and seam layout of the new liner are an exact match for the pool. There is no way to make up for an incorrect measurement once you start.
The installation The specifics will vary with an overlap or beaded vinyl, so stick to the liner’s instructions. You are essentially positioning the liner in the pool, affixing it to the track or coping and then working from the center to smooth it out.
It helps to pick a mild, sunny day when the material is more pliable. Keep the liner clean as you place it and be sure to centre the seams and corners before you let the water in. Watch for pinched material at the fittings or cove. Some will use a temporary vacuum to draw the liner tight against the floor and walls, but only employ the method the maker specifies.
When to make adjustments If the water level is still low, now is the time to correct any issues. Once the weight of the water is on the liner, major fixes are much more difficult. Stop and rework the job if you have large wrinkles that will not go, misalignment at the skimmer or corners, or a flange and track that won’t hold. Any sign of a leak behind the liner is also cause to pause.
Calling in a pro There is no harm in hiring someone if the process is unfamiliar or the pool has complicated in-wall fittings and steps. The same goes for any electrical work in the vicinity or if you suspect hidden damage. And if the walls need mending, leave it to a professional.
Once the new liner is in, let it settle by refilling in accordance with the manufacturer and then get back to normal maintenance. Test the water routinely, keep the skimmer unobstructed and follow the pump manual to ensure the liner has a long life.
