What Is an Overlap Pool Liner?

An overlap pool liner is a vinyl liner for an above-ground pool that hangs over the pool wall and is secured at the top, unlike a beaded liner.

There is a certain type of vinyl liner for an above-ground pool known as an overlap. As the name implies, it is designed to drape over the top of the pool wall and is put in place with the top rail or coping strip. This is not to be confused with a beaded liner that will lock into its receiver track; which one is called for is a matter of the pool’s design, not merely its dimensions.

How an overlap pool liner works

Installation is straightforward: you put in the liner so there is some extra vinyl above the wall, fold it over the edge and let the pool’s retaining system hold it. It is this kind of simple attachment that makes overlap liners a go-to for many when replacing a ground pool liner.

The key is to have the liner hang evenly around the wall before making it secure. A fit that is off because the material has been pulled too hard, is sagging, or has moved at the top will not do.

Overlap versus beaded liner

The distinction lies in the method of attachment. An overlap liner is clamped or covered at the top after hanging over the wall, while a beaded variety simply snaps into a bead receiver.

One should not think of a beaded liner as just another style; it demands the proper bead receiver or an adapter to work. The same holds true for an overlap liner in terms of wall height and top edge configuration. The liner guide or pool manual are good places to start.

Is your pool set up for an overlap?

Before putting down money on a new liner for the ground pool, examine what is already in place. A few things to verify:

1. Does the present liner snap into a bead track or hang over the wall? 2. What are the specifics of the model, including whether it is round or oval? 3. Are the top rail and coping strips in order? 4. What does the manufacturer have to say on the subject?

Even if the vinyl size appears to be right, a bent or missing piece of hardware can prevent the liner from being secured.

What to expect with installation

With an overlap swimming pool liner, some care must be taken in positioning before filling the pool. One will be smoothing out the vinyl, looking for wrinkles and making sure the top edge is level.

A few points to bear in mind:

  • Stick to the instructions for the model in question.
  • Leave the liner untrimmed unless told otherwise by the maker.
  • Keep it centered for even tension on the wall.

Should there be any doubt as to compatibility, a pool pro can give the all-clear on the fit before a full installation is undertaken.

Signs the liner is not right

Problems with an overlap liner are rarely with the vinyl and more often with how it is attached. If the liner is slipping at the top, or there are gaps where it should be held, or the tension on the wall is uneven, something is amiss. Wrinkles that refuse to be smoothed out are another indicator that the hardware or wall height may not be a match for the liner style.

When to get professional help

If the pool is of a certain age or has had its top edge hardware changed in the past, it is wise to consult a qualified professional. The same applies if the bead receiver track is bent or the wall is in poor repair.

Safety first: shut off the pump to get to the skimmer basket, wear the appropriate PPE and heed chemical labels. Under no circumstances should one try electrical repairs on the equipment or any live suction work.

In short

An overlap liner is secured at the top and hangs over the wall. It is a simpler affair than a beaded liner in terms of attachment, yet it still has to be in keeping with the pool’s shape and hardware. Do not be swayed by looks alone; check the manual to ensure compatibility.
