How to Improve Pool Circulation in a Dead Spot

Find and fix the causes of stagnant water in a pool dead spot by clearing blockages, adjusting return jets, and balancing flow safely.

The source of a pool dead spot

By definition, a dead spot is where the water does not move well enough. Debris will settle there, you are left with cloudy water and the odd return of algae. For most pools, there is no single culprit. You are more likely to find a combination of factors at play: weak return flow, an issue with the pump or filter, blocked skimmers or simply poor water movement in general.

Proper circulation is about getting treated water to every zone in the pool so chlorine can do its work and dirt has nowhere to hide.

Do some safe, preliminary checks

Before you start turning valves or repositioning your return jets, put the easy explanations out of the way. And for safety’s sake, shut the pump off before you open a skimmer or pump basket. Have the right PPE on hand and heed the equipment manual and any chemical labels.

Make sure to look at:

  • Any clogs like hair or leaves in the skimmer and pump baskets
  • The water level; if the skimmer is pulling air, that is a problem
  • The state of the filter and whether it is time for a backwash or cleaning
  • Return fittings for scale, blockage or a valve that has been closed

Should you notice a lack of flow throughout the entire pool, the matter is probably more than just one dead spot.

Adjust the return jets

This is often the quickest fix for better circulation. The purpose of the jet is to establish a pattern that pushes water across the pool and in the direction of the skimmer.

Some minor tweaks can be effective:

  • Direct one jet down a bit to blend the deeper water with what is on the surface
  • Rather than having a jet face a wall, angle it along the length of the pool
  • In a round or rectangular pool, set up a clockwise or counterclockwise current to keep debris in motion
  • Steer clear of channeling all the flow into a corner

It is best to make one adjustment and let it go for a couple of days to see if the improvement is there before making another change.

Get the suction and return in balance

If the suction is heavy on one side and the return on the other is underpowered, a dead spot will form. A valve here or there can sometimes even things out so the water is not just going round and round in one area.

Check to see if one skimmer is shouldering the load while the other is slow, or if a spa line or cleaner is interfering with the flow. With multiple returns, a little balancing act can send the debris where it belongs and cut down on stagnation.

Make use of brushing and adequate runtime

Give the dead spot a good brushing after and before any system adjustments to dislodge what has settled for the skimmer to pick up. A robotic or manual vacuum can be useful in trouble spots like the deep end or behind ladders.

The pump also needs to run for as long as the system dictates to circulate the full volume of the pool. If the run time is too short, you leave corners untreated and give algae a chance to take hold.

Things to avoid

There are some common errors. For one, do not think chemicals will solve a circulation deficit; they might mask the cloudiness but the root cause remains.

Do not:

  • Open baskets while the pump is on
  • Put your hands near operating suction
  • Fiddle with several valves at once
  • Swim in the event of an electrical fault or unsafe water

Time to bring in a pro

If you have done your part with the cleaning and jet alignment and the dead spot is still there, or if you have reason to believe there is a broken valve, an air leak or a plumbing restriction, put in a call to a qualified pool professional. They can get at the hidden components and verify the system is sized right. When the circulation issues are recurring or you cannot get to the problem safely, expert service is the way to go.
