How to Clean a Pool Skimmer Basket Without Making a Mess
Turn off the pump, lift the skimmer basket slowly, empty debris into a bag, rinse it away from the deck, and reseat it correctly to keep your pool tidy.

The importance of a clean skimmer basket
The job of the pool skimmer basket is to intercept leaves, hair, insects and the like before they can make it to your pump and filter. Once the basket is full, water flow is compromised and the system is put to work harder than it should be. You will end up with debris in the pool and what was meant to be a straightforward chore becomes a mess in no time.
Regular maintenance is the key to a pool without problems. It is better to do short, frequent cleanings than to let the basket get packed solid.
Preparation
Gather what you need first: a trash bag or a lined bucket, some gloves for the rougher debris, a hose and a towel for any drips. If pool chemicals are in the vicinity, have the manual and labels at hand.
Do not open the skimmer lid or lift the basket with the pump on. Reaching into suction equipment that is running or trying to clear debris from moving water is something to never do. And if you come across broken parts, cracked lids or anything amiss with the suction, put the work down and contact a pool professional.
How to take out the basket
Lift the lid off with care and put it somewhere safe where it will not be trodden on. When you go to remove the basket, keep it level and raise it slowly; this allows the water to drain back into the skimmer rather than spilling on the deck.
A good method is to hold the basket over the opening for a second to let it drip, then carry it to your bucket. Empty the contents in one smooth motion. There is no need to shake it vigorously as that only scatters wet leaves and water. For fine sand or saturated leaves, let gravity handle it.
Rinsing the basket
Once empty, find a spot away from the foot traffic by the pool to rinse it off. A utility sink or the lawn is preferable to the side of the deck.
Use a moderate stream from the hose and spray from the inside out. While you are at it, give the basket a once over for any warping or holes and wipe down the rim of the skimmer and the lid edge. Some prefer to use a mesh strainer or skimmer sock for the finer bits of hair, provided it does not impede the flow and is suited to the model.
Putting it back
Make sure the basket is seated flat in the skimmer and not at an angle before you put the lid on and fire up the pump. An askew basket will allow debris to slip through or get in the way of the cover. In an in-ground setup with a valve or box nearby, double check the position. If in doubt, consult the manual instead of forcing things.
Mistakes to steer clear of
Haste and a lack of caution are what lead to the worst cleanups. Do not:
- Take the basket out while the pump is in operation
- Walk over clean pavers with a dripping basket
- Toss debris in the wind
- Put the basket back in with bare hands if it is slimy or sharp
- Restart the pump if the lid does not close or the basket is damaged
When to get help
If you are dealing with electrical issues, tripped breakers or a circulation system that is not right, the matter is one of safety and swimming is not advised. Also call in a pro for:
- Suction that is repeatedly lost after a cleaning
- Leaks around the skimmer
- Debris making it into the plumbing
- Any unsafe condition with the equipment
Keeping things in order
For the most part, tending to the skimmer basket is an easy task so long as it is done with some regularity. Shut off the pump, carefully empty and rinse the basket away from the deck, and set it back in its place. It is a simple routine that will see your pool running more smoothly with less of a fuss.
