How Do You Know Which Skimmer Weir Door Fits Your Pool?

Match the skimmer model, opening, hinge style, and material before buying a replacement weir door. Careful measuring prevents poor skimming and stuck flaps.

The skimmer comes first, not the pool brand

Do not be guided by the brand on the pool shell alone when it comes to a weir door; it has to fit the skimmer body. Even two pools put in by the same builder can have different skimmer designs, so the pool manufacturer is merely a point of reference.

Check the faceplate, basket, lid or inside wall for any molded numbers on the skimmer. An old weir door on hand makes for the best guide to what you need for a replacement.

  • Jot down the model and maker if they are there
  • See how the opening is covered
  • Determine if the flap is held by side pins, tabs or a hinge bar
  • Make sure you know the shape, be it flat, curved, weighted or spring loaded

Should the skimmer be in poor repair with missing pieces or cracks, put down some good photos before you do anything else. It takes the guesswork out of finding the right part.

Match the hinge and measure twice

You may find a replacement that appears to be a match but will not fit in practice. For the skimmer to function without chattering or binding, the hinge points, the width of the opening and the contour of the flap must all be in alignment.

Put a tape measure or ruler to the old piece and make note of:

  • The full width of the weir
  • Height of the panel
  • How thick it is at the hinges
  • The spacing of the slots, pins or tabs

Pay attention to whether you are dealing with a simple flotation type or something spring loaded. The new one should be of the same design. If it is an OEM part, compatibility with the part number is more important than how it looks.

Consider the material and the pool

While plastic is the norm for these doors, it does not all hold up equally. Between the sun, the sanitizer and winterizing, a door can become warped or brittle over time.

Select a replacement appropriate for your setup. A standard residential door will do for most, but you may want a UV-resistant or saltwater version if conditions call for it. If the original has been warping, go with something more durable. And if the old flap is discolored, making noise or tending to stick open, it is better to put in a new one now to ensure debris gets into the basket as it should.

Put the water flow to the test

Once the new weir is in place, turn on the pump and watch. You are looking for smooth operation as the water level varies and no hard slamming in the throat of the skimmer. There should be no rattling and the door should close normally during circulation while doing its job of catching leaves.

A poor fit will mean less efficient flow at the basket and weaker skimming overall.

What to steer clear of

It is easy to make the mistake of ordering based on the pool rather than the skimmer, or to try and force a part where the hinge does not agree. Do not measure the opening and overlook the hinge, and never put in a flap that is going to jam things up.

For your safety, the pump must be off before you get to the skimmer basket. Adhere to the equipment manual and chemical labels, and have the proper PPE on for any inspection.

Know when to bring in a pro

If you are at a loss to identify the model, or the throat is damaged, put in a call to a professional. The same goes if the skimmer is pulling air or circulation is down. Sometimes a part from Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite or others seems like it should work in theory but does not in practice.

Any sign of electrical trouble or odd noises from the pump means you should get help and stay out of the water. A well matched weir door is a minor component, yet it is essential for an efficient skimmer and a clean pool.
