How to Prevent Leaves from Bypassing the Skimmer Basket
Prevent leaf bypass by keeping the water level right, checking basket fit, freeing the weir door, and balancing flow before debris reaches the pump.

The Problem with Leaves and the Skimmer Basket
The purpose of a skimmer basket is to intercept leaf debris before it makes its way to the pump and filter. That is provided the water flow is consistent and the components are in good order. When leaves are consistently getting by the basket, one will usually find the culprit is either an irregularity in the water level, a basket that has seen better days, a weir door that will not budge, or circulation that is off balance.
Typical causes run the gamut from:
- Water levels being too high or low for the skimmer to function
- A cracked basket or one that does not seat properly
- A weir door at the opening that is stuck or has gone missing
- Debris being forced around the edges of an overfull basket
- Wind driving leaves away from the face of the skimmer
Start with the Water Level and Basket
The first order of business is to shut off the pump. Put on some gloves and any other PPE the equipment manual calls for; the handle, housing and basket can be home to sharp or unclean debris. Do not open the lid until the system is off.
Perform the simple checks:
- Verify the pool is at its normal operating level
- Take out the skimmer basket and look for warping, a broken handle or cracks
- Ensure it rests flat in the housing with no gaps
- Give it a good rinse to clear fine contaminants and packed leaves
Should the basket be misshapen or have even a minor break, put in a new one. Such imperfections compromise the basket and allow leaves to slip past the edge.
A Look at the Weir Door
At the mouth of the skimmer you will find the weir door, a flap designed to keep floating matter in place for the pump to take in. If this door is damaged or missing, the process of removing leaves is far less efficient.
Look for the following:
- A hinge that is loose or broken
- The door failing to move as it should
- Leaves piling up at the throat but never making it into the basket
- An uneven or weak flow at the skimmer face
Only go in to remove visible debris once the pump is off. For a damaged door or housing, let a pool pro source a replacement that meets your pool’s specifications.
Getting Better Flow and Capture
Circulation needs to be in balance. Excessive suction at a single skimmer will draw leaves around the opening; insufficient flow and the debris will just sit on the surface.
To aid in capture:
- Run the pump for a sufficient time to maintain steady movement on the surface
- Make valve adjustments in accordance with the manual
- Net and brush the pool to spare the basket
- Use a leaf net after a windy day or when there is a heavy drop
Do not forget the pump basket at the equipment pad if your pool is so equipped. A full one will hinder the skimmer’s performance by restricting water flow.
What Not to Do
There are pitfalls to steer clear of. One should not count on the skimmer to handle a heavy leaf fall on its own, as the build up can clog the unit and put a strain on the pump.
Avoid:
- Operating the pump with a compromised basket
- Reaching into running suction equipment
- Overfilling the pool to the point the skimmer cannot do its job
- Any attempt to remedy electrical issues
If there is reason to think an electrical fault exists, or if the water quality and circulation are substandard, swimming is not advised.
Time to Get Some Help
If you have gone through the motions of checking the weir door, the fit of the basket and the water level and the leaves are still getting by, it is best to call in a qualified professional. This is also prudent if you sense a plumbing restriction, a suction leak or a flow imbalance you are not comfortable dealing with.
A pro will be able to examine the filter, pump and skimmer as a whole, spot hidden damage and put in place a proper repair rather than a stopgap measure. Persistent bypass is often a sign of a worn part or a circulation issue that requires maintenance.
With a sound basket, the right water level and a functioning weir door, the skimmer will do what it is supposed to and keep the leaves where they belong.
