How to Replace a Broken Skimmer Basket Handle Safely
A broken skimmer basket handle is usually a quick fix, but safety comes first: shut off the pump, avoid suction hazards, and choose the right replacement.

Put Safety First
Do not let a broken skimmer basket handle be dismissed as a minor issue; the repair warrants some caution. The opening of a skimmer is no place to be careless given the suction hazards, trapped debris and sharp plastic edges that can be found there. Make it a point to turn off the pump before you put your hands on the basket and verify it will not come back on while you are at work. Under no circumstances should one reach into an active suction opening or attempt to lift a basket with water running through the pool skimmers.
Put on eye protection and gloves. You will want them if the handle has left a jagged edge or the basket is full of grit, twigs and algae. And if you see a loose lid, a fault in the electricals by the timer or pump, or damage to the housing, put down the tools and get a qualified electrician or pool pro to look at it.
A Careful Approach to Removing the Basket
Once the pump is off, open the lid and have a look at how the basket is positioned in the throat. Some skimmers have a molded handle, others a pull tab or removable type. Take a firm hold and raise the basket straight up. Should the handle be gone, resist the urge to feel around for it blindly; use the rim to get it out. If it is stubborn, do not use a tool to pry it, as that risks cracking the skimmer body or driving debris further in.
The proper order of operations is:
- Shut the pump
- Open the skimmer
- Clear any loose material from around the basket
- Gently take the basket out
- Check the throat and handle for any damage
To Replace the Handle or the Whole Basket?
A snapped handle does not automatically mean the basket is done for. Certain models are one-piece plastic requiring a full swap, but in others you can replace the handle alone. Examine the part numbers and the shape of the rim before making a purchase.
You would be wise to put in a new basket if you spot warping that prevents it from sitting level, cracks on the side, or plastic so brittle it chips with normal use. Also consider a replacement if the handle gives way under the slightest pressure. When in doubt about whether a universal part will do or if you need something model specific, make a side by side comparison. Hayward owners might come across part designations like SP1091 or SPX1082CA, but since model numbers differ, match the basket itself rather than relying on the brand.
Installation
Use your hands only to fit the new piece. There should be no need to trim or force it into place, be it a new handle or an entire basket. The handle ought to be centered for ease of use when cleaning.
Prior to putting the skimmer lid back on, check that the basket is fully seated, the handle is not pinched and that nothing has been cracked in the process. Power the system back up and observe for a time. The water flow should be unimpeded and the basket put in its place. Any rattling or shifting means you should kill the pump and start over.
What to Steer Clear Of
Rushing or picking the wrong part is where most issues arise. Common errors include leaving the pump on to remove the basket, forcing a poor fit, or making a makeshift repair that will not stand up to the debris load. Do not ignore hairline cracks once a handle is put back on. And if the skimmer body is compromised or the lid is not secure, swimming is not an option.
Time for a Professional?
If the basket is immovable, the throat is cracked, or you have replaced the part only to have it break again, a pool professional is the way to go. The same applies if you suspect a blockage on the suction side or the pump is losing prime. But provided you stick to the rules and do not force the components, this is a safe and simple job.
