How a Pool Skimmer Basket Works and When to Empty It

A skimmer basket traps leaves before they reach the pump and pool filter. Learn when to empty it, what problems a full basket causes, and when to call help.

The function of a skimmer basket

Positioned in the skimmer opening at the waterline, the basket is there to intercept leaves, seed pods, bugs and the like as the pool pump pulls water through. In this way it serves as the first line of defense for the skimmers, stopping debris from making its way into the circulation system.

There is good reason for that. The basket will:

  • keep the pump and filter free of large matter
  • take some of the strain off the pump
  • aid in surface skimming
  • simplify the job of routine maintenance

Do not confuse a skimmer basket with a pool filter; they are not one and the same. The basket is only for the larger stuff. Fine dirt is meant to go on to the filter, so while the basket is an aid to cleaning, it does not do the work of the filter system.

Normal operation

With the water at the right level, the flow goes through the skimmer throat and into the basket before heading for the pump. Think of the basket as a removable trap for debris. Provided it is well seated, water can be skimmed from the surface while unwanted material is left behind.

But if the basket is the wrong size, damaged or not sitting level, it might tilt or float and allow debris to pass by. That puts an unnecessary load on the equipment and lessens the skimming effect.

On emptying the basket

It is best to empty the skimmer basket before it is completely packed down. A full basket is not required for it to become a problem.

As a rule of thumb:

  • check it daily in windy conditions, after a storm or when there is heavy tree drop
  • every few days under normal circumstances
  • once a week is fine if the pool is covered or sheltered and debris is minimal

If the water movement seems weak or you see surface debris piling up, have a look. An overfull basket can impede flow and force the pump to labor harder, allowing debris to sink rather than be removed.

Cleaning procedure

Always shut off the pump before you open the skimmer. One should never put a hand in operating suction equipment. Refer to the manual for how to gain access and don a pair of gloves or other PPE if the debris is sharp or unsanitary.

Once the pump is off:

  • remove the basket
  • dispose of the leaves and detritus
  • give it a rinse
  • have a look for any warping, cracks or missing parts
  • make sure it is set back in place evenly before you start the pump up again

When it comes time for a replacement, be sure to match the size and shape of your skimmer. You will find different styles for Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite and Waterway brands, so verify with the label or manual before purchasing.

Pitfalls to steer clear of

Some will leave a clogged basket in for days and then be surprised by a drop in circulation. Others make the error of pulling the basket with the pump running or trying to force a broken one back in.

These are mistakes to avoid:

  • treating the basket as a substitute for raking the surface
  • putting in the wrong model
  • overlooking a cracked handle or warped edge
  • not checking that the basket is properly seated before closing up

A floating basket is usually a sign the water level is amiss, the housing needs some work or the basket itself is not the right fit.

When to get professional help

There are times to leave it to a qualified pool pro. If the pump keeps losing prime, you spot air leaks or suspect an electrical fault, or if the skimmer body is compromised, make a call. The same applies if the basket will not stay put or if flow remains poor even after emptying it.

If there is any question of unsafe water or electrical trouble, do not use the pool. Power down the system and let the issue be assessed.

In short

The skimmer basket is an unassuming piece of swimming pool care, but an important one. It has the job of protecting the pump and keeping the filter supported while holding surface debris in check. Empty it in good time, inspect it regularly and always kill the power to the pump before you reach in. For anything beyond the ordinary in terms of seating, flow or electricity, a professional is the way to go.
