How to Check Clearance Above a Tall Skimmer Basket Handle
Measure the space above a tall skimmer basket handle with the pump off so the basket lifts cleanly without scraping the lid, frame, or coping.

The importance of clearance
Even a properly sized skimmer basket can be a problem if the handle is too tall and does not fit well. Situated too near the lid frame, coping or some other obstruction, the handle will tend to catch when you are putting the basket in or taking it out. This kind of interference can result in a basket that will not seat right, a cracked lid or pinched fingers.
Then there is the matter of routine cleaning. If the handle has room to go straight up and down, servicing the skimmer assembly is quick and safe. With tight clearance one is more inclined to tilt or put force on the basket, which only hastens wear and makes the job harder.
Safe access first
Make the area secure before you even look at the opening. Switch off the pump and let the water settle. Have the pool skimmer basket manual on hand and refer to it. Put on appropriate PPE like gloves and eye protection should there be sharp edges or debris about.
Under no circumstances should one remove a basket with the pump running or reach into suction equipment that is in operation. And if the skimmer lid is in any way loose, unstable or cracked, leave it be and put in a call to a qualified pool professional.
Inspecting the opening
While a tape measure is handy, your eyes will tell you a lot as well. With the pump off, open the lid and note where the top of the basket handle is in relation to the nearest obstacle above it. Take a measurement of the vertical space in its normal position and see how that stacks up against what is required to lift the basket free.
You may find the handle clears fine in the centre but binds on removal; this is an angle issue, not height. In such an instance, do not try to twist the basket hard or jam the handle up against the lid. Keep it level and take your time lifting it.
When to seek assistance
Skimmer designs are not uniform so there is no one clearance figure that applies to all. You want movement that is smooth and consistent. A well clearanced basket will come out and go back in without any scraping or jamming.
Should the handle continue to catch, check for the usual suspects:
- Debris clogging the opening
- A warped lid or bent hinge
- A replacement basket that is swollen, tilted or damaged
- An original part that does not match the new one
- A basket not fully in its seat
If you have to use force to get the handle to clear, or if the basket is binding after a clean, it is best to get a professional to have a look. The same goes for any alignment issues with the assembly, or if you notice electrical faults and circulation problems cropping up.
Ongoing safety
When the basket is working as it should, make sure the setup remains easy to service. Give the skimmer basket a good rinse once debris has accumulated and look over the lid and frame for signs of wear. Heed the chemical labels and equipment manuals and put in new parts before they become a problem for the system.
If the basket begins to change shape or sit higher than it should, consider it a warning from the equipment. Do not force it. There is no point in rushing work on pool gear when safety is at stake.
