What Is the Best Way to Clean Skimmer Equipment Without Damaging It?

Clean skimmer equipment with the pump off, gentle tools, and regular inspection. Remove debris, rinse parts, and replace cracked pieces before they fail.

Safety and the Proper Tools

To put a swimming pool skimmer in order without causing harm, the approach is to be gentle and ensure the pump is off before handling the basket. A skimmer’s job is to take on leaves and debris; it is not built to endure prying or hard pressure.

Keep your tool selection straightforward: a soft brush, a cloth, a hose set to a moderate flow and a net for surface work are all you need. Put on some PPE, like gloves and eye protection, when the basket contains sharp sticks or an accumulation of algae and grime.

A Safe Method for Debris Removal

Following a deliberate sequence will make the task easier and protect the equipment from damage.

1. Shut down the pump and let the water go still. 2. Take out the skimmer basket with care. 3. Dispose of the contents in a compost bin or trash bag as you see fit. 4. Give the basket a light rinse with the hose. 5. If the wind is up, skim the pool surface first to keep new leaves from the opening.

Should you find the basket clogged, let it soak in clean water and work the material loose by hand. Resist the urge to use a knife, screwdriver or metal hook to dig at it; such tools can deform the rim or put a crack in the plastic.

Gentle Cleaning of the Housing

Organic matter, pollen, sand and sunscreen residue have a way of building up on the lid, basket seat and skimmer throat in the form of a black film. A nylon brush or soft cloth and a good rinse will do the trick. Make it a habit to wipe rather than scrape, and to brush corners without gouging them. Check that the basket is sitting flat before you put it back. While a pool brush is fine for the waterline, leave abrasive pads and high-pressure sprays well clear of the seals and plastic edges. They will only weaken the components over time.

Look for Wear and Tear

There is no better opportunity to identify maintenance issues than when you are cleaning. Examine what controls the water flow and filtration for any of the following:

  • Faded or stiff plastic that is beginning to split
  • Cracks in the lid or basket
  • Seals that are brittle or clips that have come loose
  • A weir door that is broken or stuck
  • A warped lid

Do not try to force a lid if it does not want to sit right. You risk damaging the rim and creating an air leak that will hinder the pump.

Reassembly and Observation

Once the skimmer is clean, follow the manual to put the lid and basket back in place. Fire up the pump and observe the skimmer from a safe vantage point. The system should circulate normally with no odd sounds or visible air. If you detect weak suction, water seeping around the body, or debris making it past the basket, turn the pump off and look into it.

Pitfalls to Steer Clear Of

Rushing the job or using the wrong implement is the source of most skimmer trouble. Do not reach into running suction, or attempt to pry out debris with anything sharp. Overtightening a lid or twisting it out of alignment is another error to avoid. And do not overlook a cracked basket on the grounds that it is still functional; under load a small flaw can become a major failure in short order.

Time to Bring in a Pro

If you suspect a plumbing issue behind the skimmer, or the housing is cracked and the lid will not seal, contact a qualified professional. The same applies if you are unable to clean the unit safely or if persistent clogs suggest something is wrong with the filtration. In the event of an electrical fault or unsafe water conditions, stay out of the pool. When a repair is more involved than routine debris removal, call in the experts and adhere to the chemical and equipment manuals.
