Standard Skimmer Lid vs. Heavy-Duty: Which Pool Skimmer Cover Fits Your Pool?

A standard skimmer lid suits light residential use, while a heavy-duty pool skimmer lid handles more foot traffic, impact, and weather exposure.

The Function of a Skimmer Lid

The purpose of a skimmer lid is to seal the pool skimmer opening. This keeps debris and small items from entering the basket area and prevents any unwanted access, while allowing the top of the skimmer to present a clean line with the pool deck. For the job to be done right, the lid must correspond to the skimmer model precisely and sit flat with no rocking.

When it comes time for a replacement, do not be swayed by looks; fit is paramount. A lid may appear to be the right one but prove unsafe if its lip, dimensions or locking tabs are not in keeping with the skimmer body.

Standard or Heavy-Duty?

You will find two types of lids, distinguished largely by the amount of stress they can take.

  • Standard skimmer lids are what you would expect for an average residential setting with light foot traffic.
  • Heavy-duty versions are generally thicker or otherwise reinforced so they will not crack, warp or flex as easily.

Where the pool deck is subject to more walking, cleaning equipment being moved about, or harsher sun and weather, the heavy-duty model is the wiser option. It is not necessarily “safer” across the board, but it will stand up to wear better.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Model

Since many covers look alike yet are not interchangeable, the prudent course is to put your skimmer’s brand and model first. Before making a purchase, verify the following:

  • Is the shape round, square or rectangular?
  • What are the precise measurements of the opening and the lid?
  • Do the tabs or lips under the cover align with the make of the skimmer (Hayward, Pentair, etc.)?
  • Is this part meant for an inground pool or a spa?

If you are after a replacement, measure with care. Compare the old cover against the actual skimmer opening rather than just the outline.

Cases for a Heavy-Duty Cover

There are times when upgrading to a heavy-duty lid makes sense. You might consider one if the present lid has become brittle from the sun, or if you notice it rattling, sitting crookedly, or flexing underfoot. Repeated cracks or chips are also a sign to move to something more robust for your long-term maintenance.

That said, remember it is a cover and not a load-bearing platform. Do not use it as a step.

Pitfalls to Steer Clear Of

Failures are often the result of misuse or a bad fit. Some common errors include forcing a lid into position, relying on adhesives or other makeshift repairs, or purchasing based on how the lid looks rather than its compatibility. Never leave the pump running to check the skimmer basket area.

Handle worn plastic and debris with the appropriate PPE, like gloves and eye protection, and heed the chemical labels and equipment manual. Under no circumstances should one reach into suction equipment that is in operation or remove parts while the pump is on.

Getting Professional Assistance

If the skimmer housing itself is cracked or the opening is damaged, or if you cannot get the lid to seat, a call to a pool professional is in order. The same applies if the deck edge is broken or you have doubts over which lid is compatible. Should there be any hint of an electrical issue, a leak or trouble with the suction, keep the system off and people out of the water until it can be properly looked at.

In the End

For a backyard pool that does not see much action, a standard lid will suffice. But where you have to contend with impact, weather or heavy traffic, the durability of a heavy-duty skimmer lid is worth it. Ultimately, the best lid is one that is secure, level and made for your exact skimmer model.
